Freshly expressed or pumped milk can be stored:
1. At room temperature (77°F or colder) for up to 4 hours.
2. In the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
3. In the freezer for about 6 months is best; up to 12 months is acceptable.
Thawing breast milk in the refrigerator can take approximately 12 hours, so be sure to plan ahead. You may want to place a full day's worth of frozen breast milk in the fridge the night before so that it will be ready to use the next day.
How to prepare your frozen breastmilk:
•Remove the bag or bottle from the freezer.
•Place it into the refrigerator.
•Wait until the solid frozen milk turns back into liquid form.
•Once the milk thaws, use it within 24 hours.
•Do not refreeze thawed breast milk that is left over after 24hrs
•Place the Breast Milk in a Bowl of Warm Water
If you forget to leave the breast milk out overnight and you need to thaw breast milk quickly, you can place it in a bowl of warm water.
